Only Shiori can set the kingdom to rights, but to do so she must place her trust in the very boy she fought so hard not to marry. ![]() ![]() Penniless, voiceless, and alone, Shiori searches for her brothers, and, on her journey, uncovers a conspiracy to overtake the throne-a conspiracy more twisted and deceitful, more cunning and complex, than even Raikama's betrayal. Raikama has dark magic of her own, and she banishes the young princess, turning her brothers into cranes, and warning Shiori that she must speak of it to no one: for with every word that escapes her lips, one of her brothers will die. At first, her mistake seems like a stroke of luck, forestalling the wedding she never wanted, but it also catches the attention of Raikama, her stepmother. Normally she conceals it well, but on the morning of her betrothal ceremony, Shiori loses control. Shiori, the only princess of Kiata, has a secret. ![]()

![]() ![]() You have to change it so that everyone is talking Kangaroos with magic powers too.īut this simply isn't true. It's as if people thing it's not enough to write an alternate history of Earth where, say, the Roman empire never collapsed. ![]() ![]() They feel like if their stories only have one piece of speculation in them, they're somehow cheaping out. They think that the more weirdness the better. In my experience, a lot of people who write speculative fiction (Sci-fi, fantasy, etc) tend to make the same mistake. It was funny, well-written, and managed one of the most difficult tricks of all, which is to be ridiculous AND realistic. No more than I could jump in and do his job and be good at it.Īll that aside, I was pleasantly surprised by the book. Just because Yahtzee can be funny, clever, and witty in a five minute review, doesn't mean that he can write a funny, clever, witty novel. It's just that brilliance is not necessarily transferable. But honestly, I didn't have high expectations. When I found out that he'd written a book as well, I was curious. Like most people, I know Yahtzee primarily through his brilliantly scathing video game reviews. ![]() ![]() ![]() This is most certainly the first book that I ever thought of as 'my favorite'. Because of the animals in this book, it's sure to be delightful for the right age group. "Better Move On, Frog" was published the same year I was born: 1982. ![]() ![]() The illustrations are detailed, but nowhere near the extent of Graeme Base's "Animalia" or "The Eleventh Hour." Since the illustrations are beautiful with enough color and content for a toddler (or even an adult) to enjoy, I'd have guessed the book would have gotten more publicity and praise. Before being able to read on my own, the story's rhythm, predictability, and cadence, made it easy to memorize the simple dialog. I knew where it was located at each of the three libraries where we went, and checked it out each time. This was my absolute favorite book at a very young age. ![]() ![]() ![]() Before this book, I couldn’t recall ever hearing the name George Rogers Clark. I love history, but this is the first story I’ve ever read that sent me on a self-directed history binge to find out more about the true events of the story. Part of that was because of my busy circumstances at the time, but part of that was because this is a mighty big story and it takes some time to lay the groundwork for what is to come. It took about 150 pages to really get into the story. You are always aware of the author’s voice in the self-conscious use of anachronistic language and overwrought descriptions of former times, but James Alexander Thom hits it just right. Most historical fiction authors have a hard time making their characters real and present. As a former history teacher and lifelong history junky, I love historical fiction, and this book is my absolute favorite of them all. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Still, the secretive group hasn't gained its infamy by not producing results.
